Who doesn't know it? The oxeye daisy is the classic among our native wildflowers. And rightly so, because as a timeless white summer bloomer with a bright yellow center, it is an essential part of any colorful summer meadow. But the oxeye daisy also looks great in your home garden, on the balcony, or on the patio. With its long stem and large flower, it is a popular cut flower and has prevailed against many other pretty flowers in the battle for the top spot among the most desirable ornamental plants.

Planting instructions on the envelope
The oxeye daisy has few demands on the soil. It feels particularly comfortable in a sheltered, sunny to semi-shaded location. It grows in flowering communities and is an absolute magnet for bees and butterflies. On very hot summer days, it should be watered 1-2 times daily, although waterlogging must be avoided at all costs. If faded plant parts are removed in good time, a new bloom can develop. It reaches a height of 50 - 100 cm.

Radiant white petals surround the bright yellow flower, and anyone who sees the oxeye daisy in its glory in Central Europe knows that summer is here. With a little luck, oxeye daisies will bloom from May well into October. This magnificent plant thrives on roadsides and embankments, as well as in summer meadows and on the edge of forests, and also looks great as a cut flower. And those who want to enjoy this wonderful flower in their home garden will have a great time with this perennial plant and won't have much work to do to grow it. But one thing at a time.
The oxeye daisy needs plenty of space
In principle, you can plant oxeye daisies not only in a flower bed but also in window boxes. However, since the flowers like to spread both below and above ground, the garden bed is the more suitable location. There should be at least 40 centimeters of space between two plants. Neighbors in the bed such as coneflowers, yarrow, delphinium, or lupines work well – not only do the plants get along well, but they also look quite good together.
There are oxeye daisies that grow tall, with some species reaching 50 to 100 centimeters. And then there are those that practically just cover the ground. As different as their growth heights are, they are similar in what they require: as already described, plenty of space, lots of water, normal soil, and a semi-shaded to sunny, but in any case, sheltered location. An ideal time for sowing is the first few days after the last frost.
A little care is necessary
Although the oxeye daisy is actually a wildflower, it still needs some care so that you can enjoy the bloom in its full glory. After sowing the seeds, you should ensure that the soil does not dry out completely; potting soil is also an ideal substrate. Every 14 days, add new potting soil to promote the growth of the young seedlings. As soon as it is permanently warm, you must water the oxeye daisies – ideally twice a day.
The flowers are always very thirsty. Twice a day is therefore necessary so that the amount of water is distributed a little. If you only provide the oxeye daisies with the same amount of water once a day, waterlogging easily occurs, and this must be avoided. If you prune the growing plants from time to time, it is very beneficial for the flowering. As soon as the first leaves have faded, you should remove them. This ensures that the oxeye daisies self-seed in the future and, in the best case, the growth of the flowers will be even denser next year.
Joy for many years
If you follow these basic rules, you will enjoy your oxeye daisies for many years. However, you should divide the flowers about every third year and move them to a different place in the bed; this keeps the oxeye daisies healthy and ensures they continue to grow reliably. This only applies to hardy varieties, however. Non-frost-resistant species, which you should grow in pots, should be cut back by more than half before the frost and stored in a bright but cool place over the winter. The temperature must not exceed ten degrees.
The oxeye daisy, which is said to have healing and diuretic effects, is not only suitable as an ornamental plant. No, you can even eat young leaves and the flower buds, either as beautiful splashes of color in salads or as a topping for bread. Snails also appreciate the good taste of the flower, which is why you have to be a little careful here. If the oxeye daisies are too dry for a long period, they can be infested with spider mites. Lacewings and ladybugs like to lay their larvae on them, and aphids also like to target the oxeye daisy. Treating the flower with a soap solution helps against lice and larvae.
